Recycling at home

Every day more and more garbage is discharged in wastelands. And that becomes a great problem that needs to be solved. Every year 1,5 megatons of waste is collected and brought to wastelands in Lithuania. It's a huge number. Lithuanians just don't understand that with this behavior they are polluting environment for their kids. We do really great job in littering, almost the best in Europe. That's how we represent our country... It's sad, but we can only to hope that one day people get up in the morning and do what grownups do - be responsible for their actions.

In order to do that, we have to inform people about the ways of managing waste. This is a tough job for our government and local media, but it has to be done. Off course, ecological associations is able to help for that purpose and they will.

Every citizen throws away 500 kg per year and 33% do not separate, while 9 of 10 Europeans are separating and recycling all of their garbage. In Europe there is only 4 countries that throws away such a great amount of garbage - Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria and of course, Lithuania. Isn't this shameful? And the worst of all is that Lithuanians don't evenly understand that they are littering too much. By the survey of Eurobarometer, 2 of 3 people thinks that they are not littering too much... Also, 16,7% Lithuanians admitted that they throw away ~30 % of the food that they bought; 2-3 percent of Lithuanians throw away 50% of their food. Plus all the other wastes that Lithuanians don't care about.

"These numbers shows us that the most of the people do not understand, how many wastes they throw away. Most of that trash could be reused, especially food, garden wastes, mobile phones and other. By remaking raw materials, we could save our resources and money" says EU environment commissioner Yanez Potocnik.

One of the solutions are composting. Many people are using this way in all advanced countries. You can use it at home or apartment. At home - take a composting box and place it by your house. All the organic waste is good for composting. Also, you can make one of the best organic ecological fertilizer - bio humus. Just put some red wigglers Eisenia Fetida and make sure that there would be a constant food supply (organic waste from kitchen or garden). These small red squirms are reproducing rapidly, so you need only a small quantity of them. Bio humus can be used to fertilize garden flowers, vegetables, bushes, trees and all other plants. Also, there is a solution for those who live in apartment. It's compact compost box. You can find one of them on our e-shop. There is no leaking, no dirt, made of recycled plastic, ecologically clean.

You don't have to do anything hard or unpleasant, just to recycle. It would be a great beginning on fighting with pollution and resources wasting. As I believe, Lithuanians are intelligent and responsible nation, and one day we can become an example for other countries how to manage and use wisely our resources.
